Safety Manager



The Safety Manager is primarily accountable for leading the transportation/trucking safety management process and provides overall support and guidance to Ascend’s operations management. Additional duties to include conducting audits and inspections of the transportation safety management process at our locations. Will serve in a consulting role enabling regional, area and local managers to address safety and regulatory issues impacting the transportation/trucking operations organization.
They will also play an integral role in the hiring, training, and ongoing development of the safety team members to ensure that our highly skilled workforce is able to meet the Ascend’s expectations.
  • Ability to communicate with tact, diplomacy, influence and with authority when appropriate.
  • Effectively manages team’s workflow by planning, prioritizing, and assigning work to meet company needs.
  • Identifies barriers that inhibit smooth flow of work and propose a course of action.
  • Monitor associate work levels and provides coaching to improve performance.
  • Coach drivers and operation management on all FMCSA regulations, accident prevention and safety/compliance management processes.
  • Monitor metrics and indices reflecting performance against safety KPIs.
  • Audit all safety and compliance processes and manage implementation of these processes.
  • Ensure timely and quality delivery of New Hire orientation and assist as required. 
  • Work with our customers in association with DTS operation management, on all matters that might affect the safe operation of the DTS fleet and its staff.
  • Ensure driver training is completed with every active driver, including post-accident training.
  • Ensure vehicle inspection hands on training is completed with every active driver.
  • Ensure load securement training is completed with every active driver.
  • Ensure all active drivers/management are trained in ELD and tractor camera operations.
  • Ensure all active drivers/managers are trained in accident prevention.
  • Ensure all managers are trained on all safety/compliance reporting processes and in the operation of all technology provided for monitoring and reporting.
  • Promotes and reinforces safety and security awareness and compliance among all colleagues.
  • Demonstrates personal concern for maintaining a safe environment for themselves and others.
  • Actively promotes the proper use of equipment and adherence to processes.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with Operations Personnel, Drivers, and management of all levels.
Leadership and Management
  • This position supervises others and is responsible for being results oriented, collaborative, delegate effectively and strive for harmony, ensuring team effectiveness.
  • Participates in hiring and for providing coaching and continued development of direct reports.
  • Uses effective communication skills to provide current, direct, complete, and actionable feedback whether positive or to improve performance.
  • Reduce workforce turnover by improving employee relations.
  • Handles discipline and termination of employees in accordance with company policy.
  • Makes decisions designed to ensure the safety of our employees and the people in the communities where we do business.

  • Minimum three years of transportation experience with increased levels of responsibility
  • Minimum 2 years evaluating employee performance required.

  • Proven ability to motivate, develop and lead employees at all levels, and direct reports
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as a member of a collaborative team.
  • Proven success using MS Office platform including Outlook, Excel, Word & PowerPoint to communicate clearly and transparently with all levels in the organization.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects and meet specific goals and deadlines.
  • Successful experience utilizing excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to communicate with tact, diplomacy, influence and with authority when appropriate
  • Ability to deliver exceptional service through positive engagement and patience.
  • Able to promote a culture of trust and safety.
Education, Certifications, & License Requirements
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Associates or bachelor’s degree preferred.
